This is my adaptation of the GR54 to make it a bit more spicy, turning it into one of the most beautiful hikes I ever did. 4 variations for experienced walkers, thereby avoiding the least interesting bits in the GR54 and turning them to highlights. I renamed it the GR54 "High Route"

The first part from Bourg-d'Oisans till Monetier-les-Bains is following the official GR54 route.

V1: Then I turn to the very beautiful Col des Grangettes and Lac de l'Echauda instead of the ugly part to Col de l'Echauda (ski area!) to rejoin shortly the GR.

V2: then turning to Ailefroide instead of Vallouise, passing the steep Collet Rascrouset to rejoin the GR at Entre les Aygues. One option is to climb from the collet to the Pointe de Rascrouset (see link below).

V3: this variant is described in the official GR54 guide and climbs from La Chapelle to the refuge de l'Olan, then passing the beautiful Pas de l'Olan. After Col des Colombes, you can try to find your way up and down to Pic Turbat (not official in the guide).

V4: A last small modification for your last trip is to go from Lac de la Muzelle to Lac Lauvitel on your way to Bourg d'Oisans.

??: I have no alternative for the less attractive northern part from Le Bourg d'Oisans to La Grave, If anyone has a suggestion, please let me know. You can also start in La Grave and finish in Le Bourg, or just consider that part as a warming-up.

Apart of these variants, I can also strongly recommend a detour to refuge Adèle Planchard (up and down from refuge de l'Alpe de Villar d'Arène), as well as refuge du Selé (on your way from Ailefroide to colet de Rascrouset), from where you can walk to the mouth of the glacier.

For experienced hikers, especially the col des Grangettes where some climbing experience might make your climb more comfortable, but its not required. Be aware that the climb to Grangettes and the decent of the Rascrouset is not marked, or partly by cairns. Check the conditions of the climb to Rascrouset if you go early in the season, I suspect that lots of snow in the highest part of the climb facing north might require crampons/piolet (its pretty steep). There was no problem in August.

Detailed information on those and many other variants (in French)

Disclaimer: the gpx is indicative only and to be used at your own risk.
